Let's suppose that your computer is shared with other people, for example, family members or work colleagues. In case you have a lot of personal and important files stored on your computer, then this can be a real problem. That's because unauthorized people can access your personal data and can have access to your passwords, bank accounts and so on. This is why you should protect your data. An application which can help you in this matter is TrueCrypt.

This simple Windows application can protect and encrypt your data in several ways, keeping it safe from curious eyes. The installation wizard of the program can be completed with only a few clicks. After installing and running the program, the user will notice a simple interface with features numerous options for encryption.

Beginners can access the simple step by step wizard, which guides them through the process of creating a new encrypted partition. There are three options available, either creating a virtual partition as a file, which can be mounted and dismounted at any moment, encrypting the system partition or encrypting the entire hard disk. No matter what option is chosen, the user must provide a password for protecting the encrypted partition. One should write the password down because in case he forgets it, he will no longer have access to the data stored on the encrypted partition.

TrueCrypt includes a secure and advanced algorithm which can make it almost impossible to break the set passwords, even for hackers. Besides encrypting partitions, TrueCrypt can also install a hidden operating system inside another one. This is useful for situations in which you are forced to remove your operating system. In this case, the hidden one will remain untouched.

TrueCrypt includes some extra tools, a benchmark feature, which can test the efficiency of encrypting data using the current CPU and a key file generator, which can be used for various purposes.

Pros

It can efficiently encrypt any partition with a password, making it impossible to access the data stored on it. Besides that, it can create a virtual partition as a file, which can be mounted at any moment. Furthermore, it includes a simple wizard which can be used by beginners.

Cons

In case you forget the password, there is no way to access the data contained by the encrypted drive. TrueCrypt allows you to efficiently and securely encrypt all your system partitions, making the data stored on them impossible to access without entering the right password.
